The problem with renewables is that they are variable and need backup power systems. I found a post in Treehugger which shows that this is no longer necessarily the case: 'Simulations and models have shown that connecting geographically dispersed wind and solar sites can greatly decrease the variability of the whole system and reduce the need for backup power plants.' Sounds good to me.
