CSRminute: Rio Tinto Diamond Mine Wins Zimbabwe CSR Award for Community + HIV/AIDS Programs; Washington Wine Industry Foundation Receives $120,000 Grant for Sustainable Winery Guide
Hello, I’m Emily Polk, and these are your CSR Minute headlines for Tuesday, August 24th:
Rio Tinto’s Murowa Diamonds mine has won the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce’s Best Corporate Social Responsibility Programs award for 2009. Murowa Diamonds was presented the award by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai for its community programs with a special focus on employee welfare and HIV/AIDS program. The company’s initiatives include building schools and health clinics; upgrading cattle stock and training farmers; and providing AIDS testing and counseling facilities. Murowa Diamonds’ community programs serve more than 50,000 people in southwestern Zimbabwe.
The Washington Wine Industry Foundation has received a $128,000 dollar grant from that state’s Department of Agriculture to build a Guide to Sustainable Winery Practices. Called “Winery Wise,” the guide will provide an educational resource to Washington vintners to boost their sustainability. The free, Web-based tool will promote efficient farming practices that are economically and environmentally sound. Wineries will be able to measure changes in energy and water use over a year by implementing the program.
